Weekend Estimates: Very Fair Start for Snow White
June 3, 2012
After a disastrous start for Battleship a few weeks ago, Universal execs will be breathing a lot easier this morning thanks to an impressive debut for Snow White and the Huntsman. The fantasy adventure is projected to earn $56.26 million, according to the studio's Sunday estimate, which will give it a good shot at matching its production budget (which reportedly ended up at more than $170 million).
The rest of the top 10 has a fairly familiar look to it, with Men in Black 3 down 46% from its opening but still passing $100 million and The Avengers down 45% and cruising past $550 million after 31 days in release. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel looks as though it has topped out, and was down 28% to $4.6 million from 1,294 theaters. The one real standout in the top 10 is new entry For Greater Glory, which is projected to gross about $1.8 million for ARC Entertainment -- not bad for a niche release rolling out in a tricky 757 theaters.
In limited release, Moonrise Kingdom continues to be the big story. It will rack up another $850,000 or so this weekend, per Focus Features. With the film still playing in just 16 venues, that represents another stellar per theater average of $53,000.
