International Box Office: Titanic International Run Would Sink an Iceberg

April 18, 2012

Titanic 3D had an insane second weekend on re-release on the international chart earning $98.90 million on 10,066 screens in 69 markets for totals of $157.15 million internationally and $201.87 million worldwide. Its complete total is now $2.04 billion, which is a stunning figure. The majority of the film's weekend haul came from China, where it broke records with $67 million, which broke Transformers: Dark of the Moon's record opening weekend in that market. The film remained in top spot in Russia with $3.15 million on 972 screens for a total of $10.34 million after two. Its total in the U.K. rose to $12.68 million after two weeks of release, including $2.87 million on 429 screens this past weekend. At this point, I can imagine studio heads looking at every film that earned more than $300 million and trying to figure out if they can be converted to 3D or not. If it only costs $18 million to convert a film and it can make $200 million worldwide, it's an easy way to make money. Of course, it's also an easy way to over-saturate the market to the point of no return.

Battleship opened in second place with $54.01 million on 5,356 screens in 26 markets. It opened in first place in 24 of those 26 markets. It opened in first place in $5.96 million on 496 screens in the U.K. and in South Korea with $4.45 million on 734 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $7.79 million. Germany accounted for $4.46 million on 632 screens and $4.08 million on 369 screens in Australia. While it finished first in all of those markets, it had to settle for second place with $3.65 million on 602 screens and in third place in Japan with $3.62 million on 545 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $4.51 million. This bodes well for its opening here, and it could perform better than I was expecting. On the other hand, my previous expectations were low.

Wrath of the Titans fell to third place with $15.3 million on 9,000 screens in 63 markets for a total of $187.1 million internationally and $258.4 million worldwide. It won't catch up to its predecessor, but it will still break even sooner rather than later.

The Hunger Games slipped a spot to fourth place with $15.0 million on 5,200 screens in 60 markets for a totals of $194.0 million internationally and $530.7 million worldwide. It is holding on better than expected for a Fanboy / Fangirl film and with openings in a few major markets ahead, it should get to $600 million.

Mirror Mirror added $13.23 million on 4,545 screens in 43 markets for a total of $67.98 million after a month of release. The film opened in fourth place in France with $1.89 million on 546 screens.

American Reunion added $12.55 million on 2,605 screens in 34 markets to lift its running tally to $41.85 million. It has yet to open in a number of major markets, but it is not quite living up to expectations.

The Pirates! Band Of Misfits fell below $10 million over the weekend with $9.18 million on 4,138 screens in 34 markets for a total of $45.13 million. The film had no major openings this weekend, but it has yet to open in Spain, Mexico, Russia, and of course the United States and Canada. Hopefully it will get to $100 million, but it won't live up to its reviews.

Further down the list we find John Carter, which crossed the $200 million milestone over the weekend. This isn't a bad run for this time of year, but the film's production budget was unreasonable.
