Blu-ray Sales: G.I. Joe Waves the Red, White, and Blu

October 23, 2013

New releases were more prevalent on the August 4th, 2013 edition of the Blu-ray sales chart than they were on the DVD sales chart. G.I. Joe: Retaliation again led the way with 585,000 units / $11.67 million for an opening week Blu-ray share of 52%. Granted, this is a near perfect film for Blu-ray (visually intensive action film aimed at a Fanboy audience) but this is still an impressive result. Likewise, Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox was another perfect Blu-ray release; in fact, it has a niche Fanboy audience, so it is even better for Blu-ray. It sold 86,000 units and generated $1.20 million in sales for an opening week Blu-ray share of 58%. Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection jumped up to third place with 55,000 units / $1.37 million for the week giving it a total of 121,000 units / $4.14 million in total. It was put on sale the same week Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season Four came out and it overshadowed that release. 42 was next with 35,000 units / $797,000 for the week and 345,000 units / $8.06 million after three. This is a solid run for a drama. Despicable Me rounded out the top five with 17,000 units / $322,000 for the week, giving it totals of 2.50 million units / $60.68 million.

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season Four was the next best new release with 10,000 units / $620,000 in sales, which was enough for eighth place. The only other new release to chart was Star Trek: The Next Generation: Redemption, which landed in 16th pace with 8,000 units / $104,000.
