Rush Out to See Limited Releases this Weekend
September 20, 2013
There are a few films on this week's list earning overwhelmingly positive reviews, including the The Wizard of Oz 3D re-release. This film might do well enough to reach the top ten. Rush opens in two theaters before expanding wide next weekend, so its per theater average is not as important, but could still do well. Enough Said is the big limited release hit of the week. The film has a lot of buzz, a sad real world story, and amazing reviews. It will likely come out on top.

The Wizard of Oz 3D - Reviews
A Canadian movie about a motorcycle stuntman / former thief, Kurt Russell, who teams up with Matt Dillon, his brother, to go on one last heist. The target is... The Gutenberg Bible. I'm a huge fan of heist movies and I do have a well-known pro-Canada bias. However, the reviews are only mixed. Granted, there are not a lot of reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, so perhaps things will turn around. The Art of the Steal opens tonight across Canada.
Jonathan Groff stars as David, a man who travels from the big city to the country to run an apple farm. However, he really doesn't know what he's doing and the locals are quick to point that out. The film's reviews are good, but not great, and for the most part, limited releases need great reviews to get ahead. C.O.G. opens tonight in four theaters, split evenly between New York City and Los Angeles.
One of two films James Gandolfini made before his death that will get posthumous releases. The film also stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Catherine Keener and it is earning award-worthy reviews. It should be the big winner on the per theater chart this weekend. Enough Said opens tonight in four theaters, split evenly between New York City and Los Angeles.
I don't have much to say about this film. It opens tonight in two theaters before expanding wide next weekend. I'll talk about its box office chances in detail then.
Sam Rockwell stars as a hunter who accidentally kills a woman while hunting deer. He discovers a case full of money near the woman, money which he later learns belongs to some criminals. It's not exactly a unique setup. There have been many movies about average Joes who find money that belongs to a criminal. Also, the reviews are only mixed. Finally, it is playing on Video on Demand. A Single Shot opens tonight in ten theaters in major cities nationwide.
A comedy about sex addiction. The film has an impressive cast, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Mark Ruffalo, Tim Robbins, and others. Additionally, the film's earned some prerelease buzz. On the other hand, the reviews are only mixed. Perhaps the cast and the buzz will help it thrive this weekend, but its legs won't be very long. Thanks for Sharing opens tonight in 269 theaters, which could turn out to be way too many theaters.
It has been more than 70 years since this film was released in theaters the first time. Now it is coming out again in limited release... in 3D. I'm not sure how I feel about that. On the one hand, post-production 3-D conversions are not always a wise move. On the other hand, getting a chance to see this movie in theaters again could be worth the 3D. (If you really hate 3D, you can buy 2D Glasses.) The Wizard of Oz 3D opens tonight in more than 300 theaters and might have what it takes to snag a spot in the top ten. I'm sure the studio is counting on much bigger international numbers, especially in China.
