DVD Sales: Oz has a Relatively Powerful Start
July 29, 2013
New releases earned the top three spots on the DVD sales chart, but there was only one other to earn a spot in the top 30. Oz the Great and Powerful earned first place with 549,000 units / $9.97 million, which is a good result, given the time of year.
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters sold 271,000 units and generated $3.69 million in opening week sales. It struggled here, but did well internationally. Unless its P&A budget was too high, it has either broken even, or will break even very shortly on the home market. Snitch only cost $15 million to make, so its open week sales of 252,000 units / $3.77 million is strong. Identity Thief was pushed from first to fourth with 175,000 units / $3.49 million for the week for totals of 537,000 units / $9.74 million. Its home market run isn't particularly strong, but it broken even just based on its domestic theatrical run, so the studio should be happy. I think this should be the end of the Die Hard franchise.
The final new release to chart was Minnie's the Wizard of Dizz, which placed 34,000 units / $445,000. This is pretty good for a release like this, what is essentially a TV on DVD release.
