DVD Sales: Thief Steals Top Spot

July 3, 2013

New releases grabbed the top six spots on the DVD sales chart this week, but mainly due to a lack of competition, as there were no monster hits. These new releases were led by Identity Thief with 362,000 units / $6.25 million. It performed surprisingly well in theaters, so this result is pure gravy. A Good Day to Die Hard landed in second place with 226,000 units / $4.52 million during its first week of release. The film missed expectations in theaters, so this poor showing on the home market isn't a shock. It did perform better internationally, so the studio should be happy overall. Warm Bodies landed in third place with 149,000 units / $2.23 million. It was such a good movie that I was hoping for more, but you can't really complain about this opening when you compare it to its production budget. Escape From Planet Earth was only a middling hit in theaters, while it only managed fourth place on DVD with 94,000 units / $1.40 million. Rounding out the top five was 21 Rounds: Reloaded, with 32,000 units / $414,000, which isn't bad for a direct-to-DVD release.

Breaking Bad: Season Five earned sixth place in terms of units with 24,000 units / but fifth place in terms of revenue with $608,000. The only other new release to chart was Falling Skies: The Complete Second Season, which placed 13th with 19,000 units / $377,000.
