Blu-ray Sales: March 24th, 2013: Hobbit Reaches its Expected Destination
May 9, 2013
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was one of three new releases to finish in the top three spots on the March 24th, 2013 edition of the Blu-ray sales chart. It sold 1.36 million units and generated $31.34 million for an opening week Blu-ray share of 56%. It wasn't that long ago that reaching the 50% mark would have been record-breaking, but here it was expected.
Les Miserables earned second place with 485,000 units / $11.63 million during its first week of release for an opening week Blu-ray share of 56%. This is higher than anticipated, given its genre and target audience. Zero Dark Thirty earned an opening Blu-ray average of 54%, again better than expected, with 287,000 units / $6.99 million. Rise of the Guardians and Life of Pi were in a tight fight for fourth place. Guardians won in terms of units at 119,000 units to 112,000 units, but Pi won in terms of revenue at $2.58 million to $2.50 million. Rise of the Guardians is ahead of Life of Pi when it comes to the two films two-week totals, both in terms of units (694,000 units to 553,000 units) and revenue ($14.09 million to $12.78 million).
This is 40 missed the top five landed in seventh place with 72,000 units / $1.78 million giving it an opening week Blu-ray share of 46%. That's not a bad opening week Blu-ray share for a comedy, but its raw numbers are terrible. Return to Nim's Island only managed 26th place with 8,000 units / $79,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 23%, which isn't bad for a live action kids movie.
