Blu-ray Sales: March 17th, 2013: Lively Starts for Guardians and Pi

New releases did better on Blu-ray than they did on DVD with eight films charting on the March 17th, 2013 edition of the Blu-ray sales chart. They were led by Rise of the Guardians, which sold 584,000 units / $11.77 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 42%, which is strong, for a kids movie.
Second place went to Life of Pi with 447,000 units / $10.35 million during its opening week on the home market for a Blu-ray share of 46%. That's not bad for a drama, but given how important the film's visuals were, I was expecting a little more. Wreck-It Ralph fell from first to third with 214,000 units / $7.25 million over the week for totals of 1.22 million / $37.29 million after two. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 dipped to fourth place with 92,000 units / $1.85 million over the week. So far the film has sold 1.18 million units and generated $23.65 million in revenue. This is a strong result given its target demographic. Red Dawn was next with 61,000 units / $1.52 million for the week and 266,000 units / $6.26 million after two.
Up next was the Mulan Blu-ray Double-Shot, which placed sixth with 50,000 units / $1.39 million. This is pretty good for this type of release. Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away earned eighth place with 34,000 units / $1.00 million for an opening week Blu-ray share of 56%. It was disappointing at the box office and on DVD, so this Blu-ray share is the only really positive number. Even then, it is too little too late. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? grabbed ninth place with 34,000 units / $728,000. This is good for a catalog title, but not amazing. Willow just missed the top ten with 33,000 units / $493,000. The Hunchback of Notre Damn Blu-ray Double-Shot earned 14th place with 22,000 units / $603,000. The final new release to chart was Hitchcock, which placed 21st with 12,000 units / $282,000. It was only released on a Blu-ray Combo Pack, so there's no opening week Blu-ray share. This isn't a bad opening for a limited release, but most people were expecting this film to be an Awards Season player, so this result is disappointing.
