Blu-ray Sales: March 3rd, 2013: Dawn Not as Bright on Blu
April 19, 2013
A pair of new releases led the way on the March 3rd, 2013 edition of the Blu-ray sales chart. Or perhaps there was only one. It depends on how you look at things. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 2 earned first place with 649,000 units / $12.96 million. However, second place went to the Breaking Dawn double-shot, which sold 173,000 units / $3.77 million. Technically those are two different releases, but one could count them as one movie. Individually, they have opening week Blu-ray shares of 23% and 29%, which is pretty bad for a first-run release. However, this franchise has always pulled in more women than men, and movies aimed at women tend not to do as well on Blu-ray.
Skyfall remained in third place with 156,000 units / $3.59 million over the week for totals of 1.88 million units / $38.93 million after three. It will enter elite territory when it crosses 2 million units sold. Argo fell from first to fourth with 135,000 units / $3.10 million for the week. After two weeks of release, the film has generated $10.86 million in revenue from 473,000 units sold. Monsters, Inc. slipped a spot to fifth with 75,000 units / $2.25 million for the week. This is not the first time it has been released on Blu-ray, so it is a bit of a mess to figure out the Blu-ray and 3D Blu-ray sales. This makes it really hard to figure out if the 3D conversion was worth it.
The Master opened in tenth place with 27,000 units / $540,000. That's really good for a limited release, while its opening week Blu-ray share of 43% is fantastic for a drama. Barbie in the Pink Shoes was right behind with 26,000 units / $396,000. It is rare for Direct-to-DVD kids movies to get a Blu-ray release, so earning a opening week Blu-ray share of 10% is actually pretty good for this type of release. The Twilight Saga: The Complete Collection earned 13th place with 23,000 units / $1.14 million. That's impressive, as it was a Best Buy exclusive. The final new release to chart was Chasing Mavericks, which landed in 16th place with 21,000 units / $370,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was just under 30%. That's not a bad percentage for this type of release, but this film has also bombed every step of the way, so this is damning it with faint praise.
