DVD Sales: February 24th, 2013: Argo Rescues the DVD Chart
April 14, 2013
Argo was one of six new releases to chart on this week's DVD sales chart. It pulled in first place with 564,000 units / $8.44 million. This is not a huge amount given its box office and critical success, but it did relatively better on Blu-ray.
Skyfall was pushed to second place with 376,000 units / $6.77 million for the week for totals of 1.47 million units / $25.31 million after just two weeks of release. It is already in third place for the year. Game of Thrones: Season Two opened in third place with 242,000 units / $6.04 million, which is excellent for a TV on DVD release, and it did even better on Blu-ray. Sinister earned fourth place with 237,000 units / $3.55 million. Compared to its budget, this is a great start; however, given its box office and reviews, it's a little low. Madly Madagascar returned to the top five with 109,000 units / $542,000 for the week and 718,000 units / $3.96 million for the month. A Valentine's Day release in the top five the week after Valentine's Day. Romance, thy name is Procrastination.
Anna Karenina opened in tenth place with 77,000 units / $1.31 million. This is great for a limited release; however, it expanded wide enough to top $10 million at the theater, so perhaps it should have earned more during its opening week on the home market. The Package opened in limited release the Friday before it came out on DVD, so it is practically a Direct-to-DVD release. As such, its 17th place opening of 52,000 units / $1.23 million is very strong. The final new release to chart was Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome, which earned 26th place with 31,000 units / $607,000. This is a good start for a Direct-to-DVD movie from a TV series that is no longer on the air.
One last note, Hotel Transylvania fell out of the top five, but managed to cross the 2 million unit milestone. It is only the second DVD of 2013 to get there.
