International Box Office: Retaliation Reigns, but China Dominates
April 11, 2013
Despite falling 50%, G.I. Joe: Retaliation remained in first place on the international chart with $40.2 million on 9,220 screens in 60 markets for a two-week total of $145.2 million. This is already more than it cost to make, but this decline is troubling. Its biggest market of the weekend was Russia, where it slipped to second place with $2.57 million on 1,267 screens over the weekend for a total of $13.25 million so far.
The Croods remained in second place with $34.65 million on 11,280 screens in 62 markets. It now has $207.35 million internationally and $332.70 million worldwide. This might be enough to cover its entire combined budget, meaning it has reached profitability before the lucrative home market.
Seeking Mr. Right was the first of three Chinese films in the top five. The film remained in top spot in its native market with $23.38 million over the week for a total of $62.49 million after three. It is also playing in Hong Kong where it added $242,000 on 45 screens over the weekend for a total of $758,000 after two.
The Chef, The Actor, The Scoundrel remained in second place in China, but rose to fourth place internationally with $18.39 million over the week for a total of $30.90 million after two.
Drug War opened in third place in China and fifth place internationally with $12.94 million.
Oz the Great and Powerful was next with $12.30 million on 8,556 screens in 56 markets for totals of $240.90 million internationally and $453.51 million worldwide. The film managed fourth place in China with $11.60 million.
Jack The Giant Slayer was right behind with $11.6 million on 8,390 screens in 60 markets for totals of $117.40 million internationally and $179.9 million worldwide. Given its production budget, it needed to make closer to $179.9 domestically to have a shot at breaking even.
Saving General Yang only managed fifth place in China with $5.07 million. However, that result, and five other smaller markets, helped it reach eighth place internationally with $6.53 million over the weekend for a total opening of $6.87 million. There are very few markets where a movie could open in fifth place and still be enough to reach the top ten overall.
Identity Thief rose a spot to ninth place with $5.8 million on 1,935 screens in 28 markets for a still early total of $25.23 million. The film opened in second place in Australia with $2.40 million on 237 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.61 million.
Olympus Has Fallen returned to the top ten with $5.73 million on 1,738 screens in 18 markets for a three-week total of $16.15 million. It debuted in first place in Russia with $2.79 million on 858 screens.
