International Box Office: Croods Overpower Oz

March 28, 2013

The Croods debuted in first place on the international chart with $63.09 million on 11,709 screens in 46 markets, while its global opening was $106.73 million. The film led the way in Russia with $7.82 million on 2,166 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $12.65 million, including previews. It made $8.18 million on 521 screens in the U.K., also including previews, which was enough for an easy first place finish. Another first place victory came in Mexico, where it made $4.51 million on 1,990 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $8.80 million. It also debuted on top of the chart in Germany with $3.63 million on 728 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $4.21 million, while it had nearly identical results in Brazil with $3.35 million on 728 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $4.13 million. The film earned more number one debuts in Italy ($3.90 million on 711) and in Spain ($3.33 million on 763).

Oz the Great and Powerful was pushed to second place with $23.9 million in 55 markets for totals of $182.6 million internationally and $359.7 million worldwide. This is probably enough to pay for its production budget, and it should hit another milestone or two before things are done.

Jack The Giant Slayer remained in third place with $20.0 million on 7,610 screens in 47 markets for an international total of $61.4 million. It earned second place in both Russia ($6.87 million on 1,329 screens) and in the U.K. ($2.42 million 467). It is performing better internationally than it did domestically, but not by enough to matter.

Seeking Mr. Right opened in China with $12.16 million, but that's all the information that was released.

A Good Day to Die Hard fell from second to fifth with $11.09 million on 6,085 screens in 38 markets for totals of $221.90 million internationally and $288.16 million worldwide.

Olympus Has Fallen opened in sixth place with $4.99 million on 884 screens in 10 markets for a total opening $5.18 million. The film opened in France with $1.16 million on 180 screens, but that was only enough for fifth place.

Identity Thief reached the top ten for the first time earning seventh place with $4.8 million on 1,531 screens in 22 markets for an early total of $8.31 million. It likely won't do nearly as well internationally as it did domestically, as this type of comedy doesn't translate as well as other genres, but it made enough domestically to ensure a profit, so the studio should be more than happy.

Resident Evil: Retribution returned to the top ten in 8th place with $4.71 million on 5,103 screens in 1 market, China, for totals of $194.00 million internationally and $236.35 million worldwide. There will be a sixth film in the franchise. If the gap between the domestic and the international numbers get any greater, the studio will no longer care about the domestic release. It might as well open direct-to-DVD here.

Wreck-It Ralph returned to the top ten in ninth place with $4.2 million in 69 markets for totals of $258.2 million internationally and $446.94 million worldwide. It opened in first place in Japan with $3.58 million on 421 screens.

Warm Bodies slipped a spot to tenth place with $3.80 million on 1,006 screens in 26 markets for a total of $39.22 million. It failed to make much of an impact in France, earning sixth place with $1.12 million on 267 screens. On the other hand, it more than doubled its production budget domestically, so it is virtually guaranteed to break even sooner rather than later.
