DVD and Blu-ray Releases for March 5th, 2013

March 5, 2013

It's a strange week for home market releases. On the one hand, there are some terrific films that should do really well. On the other hand, after the top couple of titles, the quality of the releases plummets really fast. By the time we get outside of the top ten, we start to get mostly filler. The best film coming out this week is Schindler's List, which makes its Blu-ray debut this week. It is absolutely a must have; however, the Blu-ray is shovelware, which precludes it from being the Pick of the Week. The release that gets that honor is Wreck-It Ralph on either Blu-ray or 3D. It is worth paying the extra money for 3D, but not a lot of people have made the leap to 3D just yet.

The Bay - Buy from Amazon
A horror film that opened in limited release. It's not a surprise that it struggled to find an audience in limited release, as so many horror films flop in limited release. Will it find an audience on the home market? Read our review for my opinion.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Bodacious Space Pirates 2, Buster Keaton: College: Ultimate Edition, Nativity Story, Nightmare on Elm Street Collection, Rurouni Kenshin: New Kyoto Arc, and Westworld
Not a lot of secondary Blu-ray releases worth mentioning. I'm most interested in Westworld.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Kamasutra: Sexual Positions for Lovers, Touch of Love: The Intimate Yoni and Lingam Massage, and Wreck-It Ralph
Wreck-It Ralph should be a big seller on 3D, while the other two are... uhmmm... non-pornographic artistic erotica? On a side note, a 3D version of the Kamasutra reminds me of Red Dwarf. One of the characters had a pop-up version of the Kamasutra.

California Solo - Buy from Amazon
This film earned good reviews, but not great reviews, and it struggled at the box office. It is worth checking out, but unless you are a big fan of Robert Carlyle, a rental will be enough.

Dalziel & Pascoe: Season Seven - Buy from Amazon
Fans of British TV on DVD releases know the drill. This is a great show, but the price-per-minute is extremely high for TV on DVD. It is better if you consider this four TV movies instead of a season of a TV show.

Duck Dynasty: Season 2 - Buy from Amazon
Please tell me this TV fad will end soon.

Gun Hill Road - Buy from Amazon
This film is the feature-length debut for its writer / director, Rashaad Ernesto Green. It earned good reviews, but not great reviews, and it did acceptable business at the box office.

Interview with a Hitman - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A direct-to-DVD action film starring Luke Goss, which is all you really need to know to judge the film, as he specializes in this type of film. This is good news, as there are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes to help you judge the film. Extras are limited to a making of featurette, so unless you are a hardcore fan of the actor, a rental will be enough.

Les Intouchables - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
One of the biggest hits ever to come out of France. The film made more than $400 million worldwide, almost all of which came from the international scene. Granted, it did make $13 million here, which is a huge amount for a foreign language film. Unfortunately, despite this success, there are only a handful of short deleted scenes on the DVD and the Blu-ray. Still, it is worth picking up, but it is not Pick of the Week material.

Jillian Michaels: Hard Body - Buy from Amazon
There's an exercise video on the front page of Amazon.com's list of new releases for the week. That's a sure sign how slow the week really is.

Lay the Favorite - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film has a great cast and an Oscar-nominated director. Yet it failed to impress critics or moviegoers. Were they unfair? Or do I agree with the majority opinion here. Check out our review for my opinion. Also, stay tuned because on Friday, we have two Blu-rays from this movie to give away as part of our Weekly Box Office Prediction Contest.

Lego Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitzu: Season Two - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I'm a little surprised that this franchise is doing as well as it has been so far. The toys have been around for decades, while it has branched out to games and movies for a while. They tend to sell better than most such releases.

The Marine 3: Homefront - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
The first film was really bad and failed to make an impact at the box office, yet they've turned it into a direct-to-DVD franchise. There are no reviews so far, so unless you really like actions films with WWE wrestlers in them, avoid this one. Or at the very least, wait till there are a number of reviews online.

Midnight Stallion - Buy from Amazon
A family friendly film aimed at people who rely on the Dove Foundation to find movies that they can watch. Will it appeal to this audience? Will it have crossover appeal? Read our review to find out.

Murdoch Mysteries: Season Five - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A Canadian police procedural set in the 1890s. It's a good hook and it is a great show. Worth picking up. Also coming out is a Four-Season Pack on Blu-ray, if you want to make the upgrade all at once.

Playing for Keeps - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
One of the worst movies of 2012, and its box office numbers matched its critical reception. The extras are not as bad as I feared they would be (deleted scenes and a couple making of featurettes) but it still should be avoided at all costs.

Red Dawn - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
I hated the original, but will admit it is a favorite for a lot of people. I wasn't expecting this film to be a good movie or a major hit, but it was much worse that I thought it would be, while even with more than 25 years of ticket price inflation behind it, it barely topped the original at the box office. There are no extras on the DVD or the Blu-ray, making this release 100% skippable.

Regular Show: Party Pack 3 - Buy from Amazon
Good show, but most fans would rather have full season sets.

Schindler's List - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
One of the best films of all time is making its way onto Blu-ray this week. Does it still have the same impact 20 years after it was first released? And is the Blu-ray worth the upgrade? Check out our review to find out.

The Seven Year Hitch - Buy from Amazon
A romantic comedy from the Hallmark Channel. Romantic comedies tend to follow a formula very closely while Hallmark Channel original movies don't have a reputation for being challenging to their viewers. So the most one can hope for is a pleasant lighthearted distraction. Is that what you get? Read our review to find out.

Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess - Buy from Amazon
Still waiting for the screener for this release. I have heard some positive buzz about the show and Disney TV on DVD releases tend to have good value for the money.

Strawberry Shortcake: Berry Friends Forever - Buy from Amazon
The latest Strawberry Shortcake DVD to hit the home market. What episodes are found on the DVD? And is it worth picking up? Check out our review to find out.

Tyler Perry's House of Payne: Volume 10 - Buy from Amazon
I reviewed one volume of this show and that was enough to know I wasn't a fan.

Ultramarines - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I reviewed this film when it came out a couple of years ago as a limited edition special edition, but this week is comes out wide.

Unconditional - Buy from Amazon
A faith-based film that earned better than average reviews, but it still missed the Mendoza Line during its opening weekend and quickly disappeared after that. If you are interested in a faith-based move this week, go with the Veggie Tales release below.

Veggie Tales: The Little House That Stood - Buy from Amazon
A fun franchise that teaches Bible lessons with talking fruit and vegetables. Also, Larry the Cucumber sings silly songs.

Wreck-It Ralph - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 3D Combo Pack
One of three Disney animated movies that earned Oscar nominations this year. It was thought to be the favorite to win, but came up short. Is it still worth picking up? Is it a Pick of the Week candidate? Read our review to find out.

WWE: Bret Hitman Hart: The Dungeon Collection - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I'm not a fan of professional wrestling, but even I know who Bret Hitman Hart is. I'm not surprised it is selling this well.
