DVD and Blu-ray Releases for December 9th, 2014
December 9, 2014
It is a very shallow week on the home market. Granted, Guardians of the Galaxy is coming out this week on DVD or 3D Blu-ray Combo Pack and it would be a clear contender for Pick of the Week even on the busiest of week. However, after that, there is a sharp decline in quality. Calvary and Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead are two very different movies, but both are contenders for Pick of the Week. In the end, I went with Guardians of the Galaxy as the Pick of the Week.

There are a lot of anniversary editions on this week's list of secondary Blu-ray releases, but Time Bandits is the release I'm most interested in.
There is only one 3D release this week, but it is potentially the biggest hit of the year.
I was hoping to get a screener for this release, but that won't be happening. That's too bad, as the reviews were amazing. Extras include a quartet of featurettes, which is good for a limited releases, but not excellent. Certainly worth picking up and perhaps a contender for Pick of the Week.
It is getting a little too close to Christmas to release Christmas DVDs, so there's not much of a selection this week.
A follow-up to Dead Snow. This film earned better reviews, which is odd for a sequel. Extras on the DVD include an audio commentary track, featurette on the special effects, and a comic book. The Blu-ray has that, as well as the international version of the movie. Definitely worth picking up for fans of the genre.
The first season with Peter Capaldi as the Doctor earned great reviews with many critics thinking it revitalized the series. Additionally, these DVD / Blu-ray usually have great extras, although I'm coming up blank in trying to find out what the extras are this time around.
The sequel to Dolphin Tale. On the one hand, if you liked the first movie, you will likely enjoy this one. On the other hand, if you've seen the first movie, you have pretty much seen this one. The extras are good for this type of film and overall it is worth picking up if you are a fan of family films.
This show has been on the air for a long, long time, but it hit its peak about five or six seasons ago.
An Indie comedy about an experimental band whose lead singer wears a paper-mâché head. It certainly has the requisite Indie quirk to it, but does it have more than that? Or does it rely too heavily on quirky characters rather than interesting characters. Read our review for my opinion.
At the moment, Guardians of the Galaxy is the biggest hit of 2014 and also has some of the best reviews of any wide release of the year. That's a lot to live up to. Does the film live up to the hype? Or did the hype ruin the movie for me? Check out our review to find out.
We are halfway through this series' run on DVD. It is a fun private eye show focusing on a husband and wife who are millionaires and amateur detectives.
This movie has an interesting Sci-fi premise, but the science behind it is really weak and the execution was poor. Extras include a couple of featurettes and some deleted scenes. Call it a solid rental.
An Anime series that is in the top ten new releases for the week, according to Amazon.com. Like I've said in the past, that's a sign of a slow week.
I'm still waiting for the screener for this DVD. The most recent installments in this franchise have been among the best in the franchise overall, so I remain cautiously optimistic.
I'm still waiting for the screener for this release. It was late last time around, but I did enjoy the stylistic artwork and stories.
There are three TV on DVD Megasets coming out this week, including Mork & Mindy. That one is a special case, as Season Four is coming out this week as well.
I might get a screener for this TV release. I liked the first part of season one, but I thought it went off the rails in the second half. I don't know if it rebounded during season two, or if it got worse.
An inspirational sports movie that was simply not inspirational. The extras on the Blu-ray are great, but that's not enough to compensate for the reviews.
