The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 poster

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1 not only earned first place on the overall box office, but it also led the way on the per theater chart with an average of $29,366. Foxcatcher earned an average of $19,764 in 24 theaters. It is nearly at $1 million and has room to grow further. The Theory of Everything expanded again, but still remained in the $10,000 club with an average of $10,798 in 141 theaters.

None of the new limited releases did well at the box office. The Sleepwalker did the best with $2,636 in its lone theater. The only other film to avoid the Mendoza Line was Happy Valley, which earned an average of $2,262 in four theaters. Happy Ending was not as lucky earning just under $200,000 in 129 theaters for an average of $1,540. Pulp: a Film About Life, Death & Supermarkets was well back with an average of $611 in 36 theaters. Meanwhile, V/H/S: Viral earned half that with an average of $305 in four theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • CitizenFour reached $1 million just before the weekend and it could get to $2 million by the end of its run.
  • Saving Christmas reached $1 million late last week and it is nearly at $2 million.
  • Rosewater reached $2 million by the end of the weekend, but getting to $3 million might be asking too much.
  • The Theory of Everything hit $1 million in just its second weekend of release and it has the potential to expand significantly more.
  • Whiplash reached $2 million over the weekend and it nearly topped $3 million by the end of the weekend.
