International Box Office: Turtles Take Over China
November 6, 2014
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles roared into first place with $34.9 million in 31 markets over the weekend for a running tally of $244.2 million internationally and $434.7 million worldwide. This includes a first place, $26.52 million opening in China. This is the film's last major market opening until it debuts in Japan in February. The film is aiming for $500 million worldwide by that time, but it is hard to tell how long a film's legs in China will be.
The Maze Runner earned second place with $24.7 million in 35 markets over the weekend for totals of $210.4 million internationally and $307.4 million worldwide. The film earned third place in China over the full week, with a six-day opening of $13.70 million. It also remained in first place in France with $3.90 million on 456 screens over the weekend for a total of $18.34 million.
Gone Girl earned third place with $15.8 million in 50 markets for totals of $143.5 million internationally and $279.8 million worldwide after a month of release. The film opened in third place in India with $582,000 on 155 screens. It also remained in first place in South Korea with $3.53 million on 686 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.17 million after two. It is on pace to reach $300 million very soon and I think it will get into first place on David Fincher's career list.
Fury climbed a couple of spots to fourth with $14.6 million in 44 markets over the weekend for a two-week total of $38.11 million. The film's biggest new market was Russia, where it debuted in second place with $3.34 million on 900 screens. Its best holdover was in the U.K. where it fell to third place with $1.99 million on 630 screens over the weekend for a total of $8.99 million after two.
Annabelle returned from first to fifth place with $14.3 million in 61 markets for totals of $149.7 million internationally and $232.2 million worldwide. It had no major market openings this past weekend, but it did remain in first place in Mexico with $2.88 million on 2,081 screens over the weekend for a total of $16.00 million after two weeks of release.
Dracula Untold landed in sixth place with $12.7 million in 62 markets for totals of $136.5 million internationally and $189.5 million worldwide. The film debuted in fourth place in Japan with $937,000 on 325 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.22 million.
Kung Fu Jungle opened in seventh place with $9.3 million in seven markets. This includes a fourth place, $7.82 million opening in its native China.
The Book of Life climbed a couple of spots to eighth with $6.7 million in 20 markets for a three-week total of $30.1 million. The film had no major market openings this past weekend. In fact, it's next major market opening isn't until Christmas day, when it opens in South Korea.
John Wick entered the top ten for the first time in ninth place with $6.7 million in 34 markets for an early total of $8.3 million. Its biggest market was France where it opened with $1.23 million on 201 screens over the weekend, but that was only strong enough for seventh place. Its best major market was in Australia, where it earned third place with $961,000 on 177.
Lucy rounded out the top ten with $6.5 million in 35 markets over the weekend for totals of $324.0 million internationally and $450.5 million worldwide. I'm sure there's someone at Universal trying to turn this into a franchise.
