DVD and Blu-ray Releases for September 30th, 2014

September 30, 2014

Transformers: Age of Extinction leads the pack of new releases this week, at least in terms of sales potential. It is by far not the best movie on this week's list, but it does appear to have to scared away a lot of the competition. Fortunately, the next best selling new release is Chef on Blu-ray Combo Pack, which is a clear contender for Pick of the Week. The main competitor for this title is Once Upon a Time in America on Blu-ray, but I'm going with Chef.

24: Live Another Day - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The ratings for this TV mini-series started out well, but sank by the end. The reviews were great, so perhaps the fanbase has just moved on. Extras are good, but not great, so it is probably only worth picking up if you really like the franchise.

Agatha Christie's Marple, Series 6 - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Typical British murder mystery show. It has earned great reviews, but the price-per-minute is really high.

Are You Here - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Given the cast, I had high hopes for this film. However, its reviews are abysmal. Even if the DVD / Blu-ray were loaded with extras, it still wouldn't be worth a rental, never mind purchasing.

Betty Boop: Essential Collection 4 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Betty Boop was one of the most famous cartoon characters around... Till the Hayes Code destroyed her. This is the fourth and final release in this collection. If you have the other three, you might as well complete your collection. However, if you haven't bought any, it might be worth waiting to see if there will be a Megaset released this time next year.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon: Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, Audrey Hepburn Collection, Beware the Batman: Dark Justice, Blue Thunder, Golden Time: Collection 1, Interview with a Vampire, Killer Fish, Krull, Matrix, One Piece: Film Z, Psychic Detective Yakumo: Complete Collection, Sundays and Cybèle, and Team Hot Wheels: The Origin of Awesome!
Not a lot of secondary Blu-ray releases on this week's list. The one that stands out the most is Krull. It isn't a good movie, but there's some serious nostalgia here for me.

Chef - Buy from Amazon: DVD and Blu-ray Combo Pack
This will likely end the year as one of the biggest limited release hits at the box office. Is it as good as its box office run would indicate? Check out our review to find out.

Cold In July - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film has a great cast and earned spectacular reviews, but it went nowhere at the box office. This isn't too surprising, since it debuted on Video on Demand, but it does make one wonder. Is Video on Demand big enough that studios can sacrifice a film's limited release and still make more money? Perhaps that is becoming true. If you didn't see it yet, it is at least worth checking out. Extras are fine for this time of release (audio commentary track, deleted scenes, etc.) so purchasing is probably better than just renting.

Decoding Annie Parker - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The contest is a go, but I'm still waiting for the screener to review.

Dream Theater: Breaking The Fourth Wall (Live From The Boston Opera House) - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A concert DVD / Blu-ray that is appearing in the top ten of the best selling new releases on Amazon.com. That's a sign that it is a slow and / or shallow week.

The Field of Blood, Set 1 - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A British crime drama that is basically two TV movies. It co-stars Peter Capaldi, who is the new Doctor Who. That's probably why it is coming out on DVD here.

Gone with the Wind - 75th Anniversary Edition - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Great movie, but there have been too many releases recently.

Leprechaun Franchise Collection - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
There have been seven films in this franchise. None of them have been good, a few have earned zero positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. This would make a good Christmas gift for a fan of the movies, but if you haven't seen them, it is best if you continue to avoid them.

The Mentalist: Season 6 - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I really liked the first few seasons of this show, but stopped watching a while ago. There are just too many TV shows in this genre and I cut back to just Castle and NCIS. (I might drop the latter, if it doesn't bounce back this season.)

Mike & Molly: The Complete Fourth Season - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This show has been on the air for four years already? The reviews for the first season were great, but they have weakened since then. Worse still, the only extras are only some outtakes.

Monster High: Freaky Fusion - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
There are a lot of releases in this franchise and many of them sell very well when they come out. On the other hand, I'm not in the target audience, nor have I seen any of these movies, so I can't comment on the quality.

Motown 25: Yesterday Today Forever - Buy from Amazon: DVD
A three-disc, seven and a half hour long DVD release for Motown 25, a TV movie, which was a huge hit when it first aired in 1983. I might be getting a screener for this to review, but if it arrives too late, I might push it back to the Holiday Gift Guide. It does seem to be a great fit for that list.

NYPD - Season Seven - Buy from Amazon: DVD
When this show was first on the air, it was one of the most popular shows on TV, both with critics and with audiences. It has never sold a lot on DVD, because catalog titles rarely do. That said, it is on the first page of Amazon's new releases this week.

Once Upon a Time in America - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This film earned excellent reviews, but it failed to find an audience in theaters when it came out 30 years ago. This week it is coming out on an anniversary edition Blu-ray. There are not a lot of extras on the Blu-ray, just an audio commentary track and making of featurette, but it is a four and a half hour long movie, so there is a ton of value here.

Space Station 76 - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This film has a great cast, but the reviews were merely good and not great. I think this is because it was advertised as comedy, but while there are some funny moments, there is a certain sense of melancholy, which would put off audiences if they were not expecting it. Sadly, it didn't do well in theaters and there is only a DVD release this week.

Steinsgate: Complete Series Classic - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
There is an Anime series in the top ten new releases for the week, at least according to Amazon.com. Like I've said many times in the past, this is a sure sign of a slow or shallow week.

Third Person - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Great cast, two-time Oscar-winning writer / director, but the reviews are really weak and it failed to make an impact in theaters. It will likely fail to make an impact on the home market.

Transformers: Age of Extinction - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 3D Combo Pack or Limited Edition Blu-ray Gift Set
This is one of the bigger box office hits of the summer, but as the franchise track-record suggests it won't be one of the best. Is it at least an entertaining popcorn flick, like the first film was? Or does it stink just like the previous sequels? Read our review to find out.

TV on DVD Full Series Megasets - Buy from Amazon: 24, Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts, The Equalizer: Limited Edition, The Equalizer, Mega Man, My Little Pony, and Sherlock Holmes (Blu-ray)
Of these Megasets, Sherlock Holmes is arguably the best. The 24 release is a re-release with the new season added on, so fans likely already have the old version.
