Per Theater Chart: Skeletons Eat Their Fill
September 17, 2014
There were a number of films in the $10,000 club this weekend, led by The Skeleton Twins, which earned an average of $25,379 in 15 theaters. The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby was next up with an average of $19,295 in four theaters. Both of these films have lots of room to expand. My Old Lady also did well with an average of $11,335 in 11 theaters, which is more impressive, because it was a Wednesday release. On the other hand, its reviews are merely good and likely not good enough to thrive in limited release. No Good Deed was right behind with an average of $11,150 in nearly 2,200 theaters.
The best of the rest of the new limited releases was The Green Prince, which earned an average of $8,175 in four theaters. Bird People opened in one theater earning $7,443, while The Quitter opened with $5,588, also in one theater. The Drop was the widest limited release of the weekend opening in more than 800 theaters earning an average of $5,074. Pirates was close behind with an average of $4,767 in 25 theaters. Finding Fanny did reasonably well with an average of $4,259 in 121 theaters.
There were also several limited releases that struggled at the box office. Smiling Through the Apocalypse only managed $2,590 in its lone theater. Take Me to the River opened in twelve theaters earning an average of $2,132. Honeymoon earned an average of $2,066 in two theaters, while Sagrada: The Mystery of Creation was right behind with $2,009 in one theater. Finally there's Atlas Shrugged: Who Is John Galt?, which missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $1,906 in 241 theaters. This is a sad end to a franchise that never caught on with moviegoers.
