International Box Office: Guarding Top Spot

Guardians of the Galaxy remained in first place with $47.1 million in 50 markets over the weekend for a total of $138.8 million internationally and $315.3 million worldwide after just two weeks of release. It is already ahead of the lifetime total of The Incredible Hulk and should pass another Avengers film or two by this time next week. The film finished in first place in Australia with $6.08 million on 586 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $8.24 million. The film was pushed into second place in Russia with $6.01 million on 2,097 screens over the weekend for a total of $24.32 million after two weeks of release. It had a very similar result in the U.K. with the film landing in second place with $5.59 million on 561 screens over the weekend for a total of $23.24 million.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes just managed second place with $29.5 million in 70 markets for a total of $308.2 million internationally and $506.0 million worldwide after a month of release. It was a double-milestone weekend for the movie, as it became the undisputed champion of the franchise. This weekend, the film earned first place with $5.50 million on 636 screens in Germany.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was right behind with an opening weekend of $29 million in 19 markets. The film opened in first place in a couple of markets, led by Russia with $11.27 million on 1,817 screens. Meanwhile, it debuted on top of the chart in Mexico with $5.96 million on 2,312 screens.
The White Haired Witch of Lunar Kingdom remained in first place in China with $19.71 million over the weekend for a total of $55.7 million after two.
Roaring Currents dipped just 16% in South Korea, which is nearly unheard of in that market. It added $21.59 million on 1,335 screens over the weekend for a total of $80.36 million after just two weeks of release.
Lucy made its international debut in sixth place with $21 million in 19 markets over the weekend for a total of $29 million so far. This includes a first place, $12.80 million debut on 615 screens in France.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 fell to seventh with $12.0 million in 62 markets for totals of $319.9 million internationally and $490.0 million worldwide after two weeks of release. By this time next week, the film should be at $500 million worldwide, which is more than the previous film managed.
Transformers: Age of Extinction fell to eighth place with $17.4 million in 58 markets for totals of $789.3 million internationally and $1.032 billion worldwide. The weekend haul includes a first place, $2.55 million opening on 733 screens in Spain. On the other hand, it had to settle for second place in Japan with $4.76 million on 760 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $6.39 million.
Inbetweeners Movie 2 broke records in the U.K. with $12.5 million on 509 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $21.03 million.
Pirates opened in second place in South Korea with $9.41 million over the weekend for a total opening of $13.39 million.
