Weekend Estimates: Transformers Top Modest July 4 Weekend
July 6, 2014
After opening around the $100 million mark last weekend, Transformers: Age of Extinction was always the odds-on favorite to win this weekend, and even a 64% fall will be enough to keep it top with a projected $36.4 million for the Friday–Sunday period. That’s well ahead of Tammy, which will post a respectable $21.2 million for the three-day weekend and almost $33 million in total by the end of Sunday. That’s plenty for a film that cost $20 million to make.
Third place will go to Deliver Us From Evil, with a fairly modest $9.5 million over the weekend, and $15 million since it opened on Wednesday. More disappointing is the third new wide release this weekend, Earth to Echo, which will touch down with $13.5 million over five days, $8.25 million of which will come over the weekend. With a production budget reported at $13 million, the film is unlikely to lose much money, even though marketing costs will have significantly exceeded that amount.
Expanding from limited release, and timed very much around the July 4 weekend, America: Imagine a World Without Her will post a disappointing $2.7 million over the three day weekend for $4 million in total. Its $2,466 projected theater average is the lowest among the new films playing wide.
In limited engagements, Begin Again will pick up around $1.3 million from 175 locations for a sturdy $7,500 average, and will probably have a shot at the top ten in the next couple of weeks. Snowpiercer probably doesn’t have that kind of momentum, but an average close to $4,000 this weekend in 250 theaters means it will take home $1 million, give or take—a decent result given its somewhat troubled history.
