Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Theater counts: Venom will remain on top heading into its second weekend

Venom: The Last Dance

It was a slightly lower beginning for Venom: The Last Dance in its opening weekend at the domestic box office, but the film nevertheless bit off $51 million making it the number one film in the land, and by a large margin. The last installment in the Venom franchise now holds a six-day North American total of just over $61 million, and has propelled the franchise past $1.5 billion in global earnings. Venom: The Last Dance remains on top in theater counts in its second weekend, playing in 4,131 venues, despite the handful of newcomers entering cinemas. More...

Venom: The Last Dance

Although The Wild Robot began last weekend as the widest release, newcomer Smile 2 took the top spot at the weekend box office, compiling just over $23 million, and surpassing the former by $13 million in its first three days. Unfortunately for the sequel, it will fall short of a repeat, as Venom: The Last Dance waltzes into cinemas this weekend. More...

Theater counts: The Wild Robot becomes widest release in its fourth weekend

The Wild Robot

It is rare that a film becomes the widest release in the land entering its fourth weekend on the big screen, but that is right where The Wild Robot has found itself, only losing 25 locations this time around. Opening on September 27th, the movie was edged out by another robot feature, as Transformers One eclipsed the newcomer by eight cinemas in its second weekend at the box office. This weekend The Wild Robot holds the top spot, playing in over 200 more theaters than the second-widest release, as Smile 2 lands in 3,619 locations. More...

No Time to Die

No Time to Die debuted last weekend with the widest release in nearly two years. Playing in 4,407 locations, the latest in the 007 franchise racked up a solid $55.22 million during its first weekend, and currently sits at $71.6 million after six days of release. Worldwide, the film has brought in an impressive $328 million, and has yet to open in two key markets, China (Oct. 29) and Australia (Nov. 11). This week, No Time to Die keeps its count from last week, which once again makes it the widest release. Also opening this week is fellow franchise film Halloween Kills. The Universal Pictures slasher, starring Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer and Andi Matichak arrives in 3,705 theaters. More...
