Warner Bros. is projecting an $80-million opening for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire as of Sunday morning. If it hold on to that number (and, spoiler alert, our model thinks it will fall fractionally short), it’ll be the second film from the studio to surpass $80 million on debut during March, following Dune: Part Two. Whether is lands just over, or just under, that mark doesn’t really change the story though: this is an excellent start by any standards.

As no surprise, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire easily topped the box office charts in its opening week, pushing previous number ones, Dune: Part Two, and Kung Fu Panda 4 to the second and third place spots respectively. The latest installment fired up just over $45 million in its opening weekend, catapulting the franchise over the $1 billion mark, where it currently sits with $1.014 billion in earnings. This week looks to be a one and done at the top for Frozen Empire as Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire smashes into theaters.

It was another battle at the domestic box office this week with Kung Fu Panda 4, and Dune: Part Two once again going head-to-head for the number one and number two spot, with the former taking the weekend, while the latter topped the weekday dailies chart. To date, the two films have combined for over $328 million in domestic revenue, with Dune grabbing $213 million, while Kung Fu Panda 4 holds $114 million. This week will see both take a backseat to the latest in the Ghostbusters franchise as Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire charges into theaters.

After a successful opening week at the worldwide box office, Dune: Part Two adds three locations this week, once again taking the top spot on our theater count chart by playing in 4,074 theaters. Domestically, the sequel scored $82.5 million during its opening weekend and passed the $100-million mark on Wednesday, clocking with with a six-day domestic total of $104.62 million. The film’s opening weekend figure doubled that of its predecessor’s $41 million. This week will pose a much bigger challenge however as three new wide releases make their debut on the big screen.

After two weeks as the most widely-available film in North America, Madame Web will take a backseat this week to the highly anticipated sci-fi epic feature, Dune: Part Two. The follow-up to 2021’s Dune, Dune: Part Two is set to begin its theatrical run in 4,071 movie houses, including IMAX and 70mm-format releases. That’s down a little from its predecessor, which debuted in 4,125 locations.

Despite taking a backseat at the box office to Bob Marley: One Love during its opening frame, Madame Web once again finds itself as the widest release in North America this weekend, as it retains (mostly by contractual obligation) its opening count of 4,013 theaters. The superhero film starring Dakota Johnson has earned over $28 million in its first eight days, a figure that has been doubled by One Love, which opened alongside Madame Web on Valentine’s Day. This week witnesses three new wide releases, accompanied by a pandemic era film making its way back into cinemas.

Dune arrived in North American theaters last weekend and took in a solid $41.01 million in its first three days from 4,125 theaters. The film is expected to retain that count heading into its second week. Fans of the sci-fi epic will be pleased as a sequel was announced earlier this week. Dune: Part 2 is set to launch on October 20, 2023. Rounding out the top five widest releases this week are the returning films Halloween Kills (3,616 locations), Ron’s Gone Wrong, (3,560), No Time to Die (3,507), and Venom: Let There Be Carnage in 3,278 theaters. But no less than five new wide releases and one wide re-release are also landing in theaters this weekend.
