Synopsis

When professor Walter Vale travels to New York for a lecture, he’s stunned to find illegal immigrants Tarek and Zainab living in his apartment. It comes out that it was rented to them by a swindler, and Vale feels sufficiently sorry for them that he invites them to stay. They get on well until Tarek is accused of jumping a subway turnstile and lands in a detention center. He risks being deported, and Vale does everything he can to prevent it.

Awards Season - Oscar Nods far from Curious

January 22nd, 2009

For a year without an obvious front-runner for the Oscar race, there were not a whole lot of surprises when it came to the nominations. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced their nominations today and leading the way was The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with thirteen while Slumdog Millionaire was second with ten. Awards Season - Hat Trick Of Guild Nominations

January 9th, 2009

The final guild nominations were recently announced, and there are several theatrical categories to get to. The three guilds, DGA, PGA, and WGA, announced out eight nominations in total, which really help to fill in the gaps for prediction the Oscar nods. Or in some cases, just make matters more confusing. Awards Season - SAG Strikes Back

December 28th, 2008

The Screen Actors Guild nominations were announced last Friday, but in the holiday rush, they fell through the cracks. Perhaps that's because most SAG talk these days revolves around possible strike action. The big player here is undoubtedly Doubt, which picked up four individual nods and one for its primary cast. DVD Releases for October 7, 2008 - Part II

October 7th, 2008

It's not a good week for first-run releases, as there's not a single one from that group that would get serious contention for DVD Pick of the Week. However there are a number of other contenders, including classic releases Sleeping Beauty - Two-Disc Platinum Edition - on Blu-ray and Ray Harryhausen - Ultimate Collector's Giftset on DVD or Blu-ray. There as also a couple of TV on DVD picks to look at like 30 Rock - Season Two and Robot Chicken - Season Three. The final release this week that I would like to give a shout out to is Jack Brooks - Monster Slayer on DVD. (Finally, there are a couple of late spotlight reviews that are worth picking up: NCIS - Season Five and Ghost Whisperer - Season Three.) One last note. While first run releases were weak, the overall list was long and the first part can be found here. More...

Sexy Start on the Per Theater Chart

June 3rd, 2008

The overall box office leader, Sex and the City, was also the leader on the Per Theater Chart with $17,305. Second place went to Savage Grace, which earned an average of $11,156 in two theaters. Last week's winner, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, snagged third place this weekend with and average of $10,496. On the other hand, War, Inc. just missed the $10,000 by the tiniest of tiny margins at $9,985. More...

It's War Out There on the Per Theater Chart

May 28th, 2008

The $10,000 club was a little more crowded than expected with a few surprise entries, but there was no surprise on top. Not only did Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull top the overall box office chart, it also came in first place on the per theater average chart with $23,507 over the three-day weekend, and nearly $30,000 over four. The Edge of Heaven opened with $18,593 in one theater, which is made even more impressive since it opened on a Wednesday. War, Inc. opened to weak reviews, but managed a surprisingly strong per theater average of $17,668. The final film in the $10,000 club was A Jihad for Love with $10,519 over three days and $17,284 including its box office over Wednesday and Thursday. More...

Reprise Wears the Crown of the Per Theater Chart

May 20th, 2008

Reprise earned nearly $50,000 in three theaters over the weekend for a per theater average of $16,353, which was enough to top the charts. The only other film to reach the $10,000 mark was Prince Caspian, which earned a disappointing average of $14,007. More...

A Prince Among Kings

May 19th, 2008

The weekend box office was ... mixed, to be generous. The box office leader, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, missed expectations by $30 million, give or take, while the overall box office numbers was also well below expectations at $132 million. At least this was above last weekend's box office tally by about 5%, but below last year's pace by a flabbergasting 27%. Year-to-date 2008 lost even more ground and is now behind last year's pace by nearly 4% $3.21 billion to $3.09 billion. Things need to turn around soon lest the narrative becomes the slumping box office, however, I don't see that happening. More...

Iron Man the Wise Choice to Top Per Theater Chart

May 13th, 2008

Not only did Iron Man remain on top of the weekend box office chart, it also topped the per theater chart with an average of $12,452. The only other film to top $10,000 was Surfwise, which did it with $10,304 in one theater. More...

Iron Floats to the Top of the Per Theater Chart

May 6th, 2008

The first blockbuster release of the summer, Iron Man, placed first on the Per Theater Chart with an impressive average of $24,877. Second place was a bit of a surprise as cult director Harmony Korine's latest film, Mister Lonely, did better than expected with $16,769 in one theater. Roman de Gare was the only holdover in the $10,000 club as it doubled its theater count, to two, and earned an average of $11,267. Two other new releases, Son of Rambow and Redbelt opened with nearly identical averages of $10,758 and $10,560 respectively. Both have at least a shot at serious expansion over the coming weeks. More...

All Quiet on the Per Theater Front

Visitor Looking for a Long Stay on the Per Theater Chart

April 16th, 2008

The Visitor opened in first place on the Per Theater Chart with an average of $21,622 in 4 theaters, which bodes very well for this Friday's expansion. Young @ Heart scored second place with an average of $12,734 over the weekend and $15,558 from Wednesday to Sunday. The final film in the $10,000 club was Flight of the Red Balloon, which was down 32% to $11,959. The closest film to $10,000 that didn't make was Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour with $8,424, which is that film's best per theater average since its second week of release. Movie Website Reviews for Weekend of April 11, 2008

April 12th, 2008

Like last week, there are only 11 movie that came out this week, however, more of them have real sites. But unlike last week, none of the site rises to the level of the Weekly Website Award. I would rate either The Visitor - Official Site or Smart People - Official Site as the best of the rest, but while both are effective, neither are award-worthy. More...

(Finally, there are a couple of late spotlight reviews that are worth picking up: NCIS - Season Five and Ghost Whisperer - Season Three.) One last note. While first run releases were weak, the overall list was long and the second part of my run-down can be found here.

All Quiet on the Per Theater Front

April 22nd, 2008

No film was able to top $10,000 on the per theater chart this past weekend. The Visitor came the closest with an average of $9,250 in 18 theaters. More...

More...
