DVD Releases for April 7th, 2009 - Part II

April 7th, 2009

The last of the winter releases are trickling on to the home market; however, we are at the tale end of the hits and are getting the near misses now and that leaves a void in major hits at the top. I do like Deadliest Catch - Season 4, but I can't rate a featureless DVD as the DVD Pick of the Week. So that honor goes to Doubt, which is worth buying on DVD or Blu-ray. But I would go with the latter. As has become customary, this week's list has to be split into two, with the first part found here. More...

DVD Sales - New Releases are Lost in a Fog

April 7th, 2008

New releases didn't have a major impact on the DVD sales chart this week and that helped I Am Legend remain in top spot with 803,000 units sold for revenue of $15.32 million for the week. Its total sales have reached $81.71 million from 4.36 million units making it the best-selling DVD of the year so far. More...

International Details - Step Up Falls Down and Out of the Top Five

April 6th, 2008

Step Up 2 The Streets fell more than 40% last weekend while dropping out of the top five. This was mainly due to the lack of major openings, while its holdover results were merely average. In the U.K. it was down 42% to $2.74 million on 351 screens over the weekend for a total of $11.32 million and in Australia it was down 44% to $1.31 million on 188 screens lifting its total to $5.10 million after two. Overall it added $7.38 million on 1615 screens in 27 markets for a total of $53.21 million, which was enough to lift its worldwide total to more than $100 million. More...

DVD Sales - Enchanted has Legendary Opening

March 31st, 2008

New releases had an impressive one-two punch on the DVD sales chart with I Am Legend leading the way over second place Enchanted by 3.56 million to 2.82 million in terms of units and $66.39 million to $44.69 million in terms of dollars. They are not only the top two for the week, they are the top two openings of 2008 so far, and catapult both movies into the top four for the year to date. More...

DVD Sales - Bee Earns an A on Sales Chart

March 23rd, 2008

There were eight new releases to chart this week, including seven of the top eight spots. Needless to say, we had a new sales champion with Bee Movie leading the way with 1.41 million units sold for total revenue of $23.09 million. That isn't the best start of the year, but it is close. In fact, the film is already the ninth best-selling DVD of 2008 More...

International Details - Dozens of Countries for Old Men

March 16th, 2008

No Country For Old Men slipped out of the top five but still added $7.07 million on 1881 screens in 47 markets for a total of $60.56 million. It is on track to top its domestic box office shortly, which would give it $150 million worldwide. More...

DVD Releases for March 11, 2008

March 11th, 2008

A rather slow week for new releases, which is good because three DVDs arrived late last week and I was able to get caught up on spotlight reviews. (Actually, I'm not completely caught up as at least one failed to show up in time for this week.) As for the DVD Pick of the Week, the obvious choice would seem to be No Country for Old Men, but the lackluster DVD just screams double-dip and in the end I went with Stargate - Ark of Truth - Buy from Amazon instead. International Top Five - Tres Bien

March 5th, 2008

The French film, Bienvenue Chez les Ch'its, opened over the weekend and it performed tres bien, which means very well. ... I think. I may have just said something rude in French. (On a side note, it was one of four such films to chart this weekend, although it was the only one to reach the top five. We will get to the other three on Sunday.) It set records in its native market earning $31.67 million on 793 screens over the weekend for a total of $36.58 million including previews. Overall it pulled in $32.53 million on 838 screens over the weekend for a total of $37.40 million while its per screen average or $38,816 was the best so far this year. For a film that reportedly cost just 11 million Euros to make, which is about $16 million American, this is a fantastic opening. Even if it had a larger than average P&A budget, it is likely that the film has already shown a profit. More...

4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days may have been snubbed by Oscar, but moviegoers felt differently as it earned more than $50,000 in 2 theaters for an average of $25,856 over the weekend. U2 3D earned a million dollars during its opening, more or less. Less over the weekend, but more since Wednesday. This helped it into second place on the per theater chart with an average of $15,808 in 61 theaters. The final film to top $10,000 was L'Annee Derniere a Marienbad in its second weekend of re-release earning $13,719 in one theater. More...

Dreaming of a Green Christmas

December 18th, 2007

We finally got some really good news this weekend as I Am Legend smashed all expectations and broke records along the way. Overall, the box office pulled in $161 million over the weekend, which was almost double last weekend's number. More importantly, it was 35% more than the same weekend last year. Hopefully this isn't the last positive surprise of the holiday season and 2008 can end on a high note. More...

Building on a Legend

Compass Can't Find an Audience

December 11th, 2007

The box office has been soft practically since summer ended, but things are starting to get desperate. This was another week of significant declines at the box office, with overall business of just $82 million. That's down more than 2% from last weekend, and, more significantly, down more than 15% from the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2007 is still ahead in terms of raw dollars, but ticket sales are now trailing last year's pace. More...

Compass Loses Bearings

December 9th, 2007

His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass made a thoroughly disappointing debut in theaters over the weekend, earning just $26.1 million, according to estimates released on Sunday. That's substantially short of the $30 million - $40 million that New Line had announced as their target, and leaves their $300 million plus investment horribly in the red. Only a miracle can save it now. More...

Will Golden Rule?

December 6th, 2007

Thanksgiving Weekend Estimates: Enchanted Movie Market

November 25th, 2007

As expected, Enchanted won the Thanksgiving box office race, according to studio estimates released on Sunday. With a solid $35 million over the three day weekend, and $50 million in five days, the family fantasy had an excellent debut. If strong reviews translate into good word-of-mouth, this could be the first blockbuster of the Holiday Season. The biggest surprise of the weekend, though, was This Christmas, which blew past its tracking numbers and beat everyone's expectations with an estimated $18.6 million in just 1,858 theaters. It has already notched up $27.1 million in its first five days. Also out-performing expectations was Hitman, which finished fourth with a very creditable $13.035 million. More...

The only other film to top $10,000 was Holly with $12,442 in its lone theater. More...

Contest - Spellbound

November 16th, 2007

Thanksgiving weekend means two things: Binge eating and holiday shopping. We can't help you with the first part, but we have some prizes that would make great gifts and all you have to do to win is simply predict the box office opening for Enchanted. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of What Would Jesus Buy? and a signed poster from No Country For Old Men. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win a copy of What Would Jesus Buy?. Finally, whoever comes closest, regardless if they go over or under, will win Star Trek: The Original Series - Season 1, on HD-DVD/DVD Combo, and since its MSRP is nearly $200, you will want to win this one. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

No One Tops Old Men on Per Theater Chart

November 13th, 2007

No Country for Old Men was the latest Oscar hopeful to hit theaters, and while so many have failed to live up to expectations, this was not the case here. Despite opening in 28 theaters, it pulled in more than $1 million over the weekend and led the per theater chart with an average of $43,798. The only other film to come close was Holly with an opening of $32,406 in one theater. Finally, Om Shanti Om was the second limited release to crack $1 million over the weekend, earning an average of $15,475 in its 114 theaters. More...

2007 Preview: November

November 1st, 2007

After a horrible October, we finally get to November and the start of the holiday season. Just like the summer season doesn't officially begin until Memorial Day, the winter holiday season doesn't officially begin until the Thanksgiving long weekend. However, studios are trying to stretch the lucrative box office season as long as possible and the holiday-like releases start during the first weekend of the month. This means practically every weekend this month, there's at least one potential $100 million movie. There are also a few that might be Oscar contenders, although not as many as I had expected. In fact, so far Award Season has been particularly slow, but at least this means there should be more buzz surrounding the upcoming films as the race is wide open. More...
