Synopsis
“Lucha libre” (free fighting) is known to millions around the world as Mexico’s colorfully acrobatic version of professional wrestling. For many, the Luchadores are the Superheroes of Mexican pop culture: El Santo and Blue Demon, the stars who built the business, are the country’s Superman and Batman. These masked warriors filled arenas long before Vince McMahon innovated modern North American wrestling. CMLL, the original wrestling organization, has a consistent viewership of 15-20 million every week in Mexico, and plays even wider to the massive international Spanish-speaking audience. It is a traditional entertainment that has ingrained itself in Mexican culture, but one that continues to grow and revitalize for each new generation.
