DVD and Blu-ray Releases for October 9th, 2012

October 8th, 2012

It is a soft week for new releases with only Prometheus looking strong. The film has earned polarizing reviews, so while many will like it, it's probably best to rent the DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 3D Combo Pack instead of buying outright. There are some TV on DVD releases and limited releases coming out this week, but you have to look to the catalogue Blu-rays coming out this week that are contenders for Pick of the Week. E.T. The Extraterrestrial, hasn't arrived yet, but its Anniversary Edition Blu-ray could be the best film on this week's list. However, Dial M for Murder in 3D is also a contender. 3D is still a niche market, so E.T. is the best bet for Pick of the Week. More...

Featured Blu-ray Review: Jeepers Creepers

October 5th, 2012

Jeepers Creepers is a low-budget horror film that was released on Labor Day long weekend back in 2001. Most people were not expecting it to be a huge hit. However, it broke the record for big Labor Day long weekend box office. Granted, at the time that record was just $13.11 million / $15.83 million and the film did fall more than 50% the following weekend. It still did well enough to warrant a sequel. (On a side note, this sequel also broke the Labor Day long weekend box office record.) Now it is making its Blu-ray debut more than a decade later, but can it live up to its record-breaking opening? Or was it for for a time merely the best of the worst long weekend of the year? And does it shine on Blu-ray? Or is it hampered by a low budget and a lack of attention by the studio? More...

September 11th, 2012

This week is again dominated with TV on DVD releases, including more than half the first page on Amazon.com's list of best-selling new releases. There is one first-run release that is doing really well: Snow White and the Huntsman - Extended Edition on DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack. It's worth picking up, but not Pick of the Week material. To find contenders for that title, one must look to the TV on DVD releases, including 30 Rock: Season Six and Absolutely Fabulous: 20th Anniversary Specials. But the winner was Castle: Season Four.
